Fancy meeting you here

It's wonderful who you find yourself rubbing shoulders with in a library or book store. 

I popped into my local Chapters store in Halifax the other day and found myself nuzzling up against The Boss. Yes, Bruce Springsteen's autobiography, Born to Run, was leaning up against The Golden Daughter, my story based on my mother's secret letters from World War 2.

Now, I should say that this was more of a thrill for my husband than it was for me. But I certainly appreciate Bruce's gritty storytelling, and his courage in revealing some of the personal challenges in his own journey through life. 

It was also nice to see that on the other side of Springsteen's book was my friend Roxana Spencer's remarkable story, The Traitor's Daughter.

It's interesting how your neighbours on a book shelf change through time. Last time I checked at Chapters I was keeping company with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Peter Sellers and my former CBC colleague Brian Stewart.

Next time you pop into a bookshop or library with just one title on your mind, don't forget to pause a moment and check out the neighbourhood: you never know who your chosen author is hanging out with.
