The Golden Daughter hits Mainstreet

ree

Just back from the CBC studio in Halifax where I got to talk to Mainstreet host Jeff Douglas (above) about my new book The Golden Daughter. I had such a wonderful conversation with Jeff, who had read the book and had some insightful questions, one of which reduced me to tears.

We talked for 16 minutes, but we focused on the origins of the book: how I discovered a cache of 55 letters, mostly in Russian, which my mother had kept hidden away for almost 80 years.

The letters gave heart-breaking insights into how my mother - then a teenager - was abducted from her school in Ukraine by Nazi soldiers and sent in a cattle car to Germany where she spent the rest of World War II as a work slave. That experience shaped the rest of her life - and, I believe, mine too.

You can hear the interview on the CBC listen app. Here’s the link:

It's also available as a CBC podcast:

The Golden Daughter will be in bookstores on August 5. You can pre order your copy now through any of the links on this website to national and local booksellers.
